
Martin S. Pernick's A Calculus of Suffering. Pain, Professionalism,
and Anesthesia in Nineteenth Century America (1985, Columbia University Press) draws on a wide range of primary sources. Its account of the often hostile or ambivalent response on the part of American medical professionals to the introduction of anaesthetics is a useful corrective to Whiggish medical history.
